Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that was originally developed by psychologist, Dr. Marsha Linehan, to treat Borderline Personality Disorder. Years of research have shown it to be effective in alleviating the symptoms of BPD. DBT has since proven to be effective in helping people with a wide range of concerns including depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and eating disorders.
DBT skills are designed to help people in four main areas:
Mindfulness - being present in the here & now and practicing nonjudgmental awareness to events, situations, or one's own thoughts and feelings
Interpersonal Effectiveness - how to skillfully get one's needs met in social situations
Emotional Regulation - how to change emotions that you want to change, how to stay more "even" with respect to emotions
Distress Tolerance - how to tolerate or survive very painful situations, when change isn't possible
